Message from the Head of School

Give Your Children The Edge They Need

The media is replete with news about how competitive the college admissions process has become. Without the proper preparation, guidance, ability to navigate through the increasingly difficult application process, and an edge above the competition, many high school graduates are finding their dreams of attending their first-choice schools to be more of a challenge than they anticipated.

How do we give them the edge they need?

What are the benefits of the outstanding dual curriculum DKJA offers that shine when applying for college?

What process should be followed during the college application process?

These are just a few of the topics that will be covered on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 (grades 8-10)  and Thursday, March 5, 2009 (grade 11), when we host informative presentations by Mandee Heller Adler and Barry N. Liebowtiz of International College Counselors. The dynamic team will be joining us next year as our college counselors, and they will be providing invaluable information during their discussions next week, which take place at the High School at DKJA. (Please read Dr. Thompson’s Message that follows this article for further information. You don’t want to miss these programs!)

A successful high school career, and the transition to a successful college experience, are crucial to success in today’s competitive world. Please joins us so that your students are prepared for their post-secondary education.

On another note…
The days and weeks of this school year seem to be flying by before our eyes. Two days ago, we ushered in the Jewish month Adar with much joy and glee. The levity brought a smile to my face as students and teachers celebrated by wearing whimsical hats and socks. The teachings of our rabbis explain that the reason for the added simcha during this time is because “when Adar comes, we increase joy and happiness.”

Principal of Lower School Judaic Studies Yafa Levit summarized the invigorating spirit best. “The lively music and the colorful sea of hats set the tone for a joyous mood for everyone in attendance. The abundance of joy in the month of Adar is primarily due to the presence within the month of the holiday of Purim," she said.

We have many celebrations to anticipate, in addition to Purim (March 10, 2009). We hope you will be joining us on Saturday, March 7, 2009 for our 25th Benefit Ball & Auction, the theme of which is Pura Vida (event begins Post Shabbat).

In closing, I’d like to extend a magnanimous “thank-you” to the more than 720 volunteers who helped make the world a better place on Mitzvah Day this past weekend. The phenomenal impact and commitment to tikkun olam could not have made me more proud. A special thanks to our Community Service Coordinator, Dr. Yoram Dahav, for bringing our DKJA Family together for this amazing event.

Shabbat Shalom,

Karen Feller

Head of School

Message from High School Principal Dr. Stephen Thompson

Dear Parents:

After an extensive search, we are pleased to announce that International College Counselors will provide college guidance services to our high school students beginning in the 2009-2010 academic year. College Guidance Counselors Mandee Heller Adler and Barry N. Liebowitz will provide their expertise to students and the assist them with navigating the college application process.

Mrs. Adler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a BSE from the Wharton School and a BA from the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, she earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School. She has been providing college counseling services privately to students for the past six years.

Mr. Liebowitz, who received a BA from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, joined ICC in 2008 and brings with him years of experience working with high school students in preparing their college applications. He has considerable experience with helping students with an interest in college athletics pursue their opportunities.  Both Mrs. Adler and Mr. Liebowitz are skilled at assisting students with choosing and applying to the "right" college or university for them,  and in helping parents negotiate the confusing financial aid application process. They are supported by an extensive staff of researchers that will aid them in providing information to our students and parents.

To provide further insight, I encourage you to please read the article below from the Sun-Sentinel that recently featured International College Counselors.

Sincerely,
Stephen E. Thompson, Ph.D.
